A few thoughts on the two new 3DS StreetPass games and the Mii Plaza 'upgrade'

Now that I've spent a full week with Nintendo's latest pair of 3DS StreetPass games, I thought I'd take a few minutes to share my thoughts on them--and the Mii Plaza "upgrade" that was released alongside the aforementioned pieces of software.

OK, so I didn't spend the entirety of the last week with these titles--one of which is known in this neck of the woods as Battleground Z and the other of which is known as Ultimate Angler--but I did spend a few minutes with them each and every day (thanks to the handful of StreetPasses I nabbed during my commutes to and from work).

So, what do I think of these bite-sized efforts now that I've experienced at least a little of what they have to offer? For starters, I'll say that I'm enjoying Battleground Z a lot more than I thought I would before I downloaded it. Granted, the main reasons I was fairly ho-hum about this game in advance of actually playing it is that I'm no longer all that enamored with the undead and I've never much cared for the beat 'em up genre. Neither of those things have gotten in the way of me having an absolute blast with Battleground Z so far, though, so clearly the folks at Good-Feel did something right when they made it.

My favorite aspect of Battleground Z at the moment: the wacky weapons that StreetPassed Miis offer up when you save them. Flash-enabled cameras, superhero costumes and Wii remotes all have been handed over to me so far, and every one of them has proven its worth in battle--while also bringing a smile to my face, of course.

As for Ultimate Angler, I'm slowly but surely warming up to it after initially finding it a bit chilly. For whatever reason, my first few stints with it had me yawning. Maybe my expectations were too high heading into it? After all, I usually love fishing games--especially cute ones.

It's quite possible my main issue with Ultimate Angler early on was its reeling mechanism, which makes enough sense (spin your 3DS' circle pad to pull in a fish) in theory, but feels kind of awkward in practice. I think I'm beginning to get a handle on it, though, so hopefully my opinion of it will perk up in the coming days.

Even if it doesn't, I'll still consider Ultimate Angler a more worthy pick up than the Mii Plaza upgrade that's currently being sold for just under five smackeroonies (that would be $5). As far as I can tell, all this purchase provides 3DS owners with is the ability to collect and catalog (à la a game of bingo) the birthdays of StreetPassersby as well as the ability to move your favorite Miis into some sort of VIP room. Pretty exciting, right?

Seriously, though, despite my rather ho-hum response to the Mii Plaza upgrade, I'm pretty happy I handed over my hard-earned cash for Battleground Z and Ultimate Angler. Are any of you feeling the same way, or are you wishing you'd saved your dough? Let me--and others--know in the comments section below.

I'm enjoying the two games. I haven't experienced all of the Battleground Z weapons yet, but I'm liking the pillow with its Robotron-style attack sheep.

Ultimate Angler is nice, too. The reeling mechanic took some adjustment, but I like all the other bits like upgrading rods and buying fish tanks. My only gripe is the game needs a screenshot function so you can show off your prize catch, sort of like how Flower Town lets you save garden pics to your memory card.
I'm glad they added the ability to put games I'm not playing anymore in a vault to stop notifications. Very handy.

Agreed on all counts, Terry. I especially love the pillow weapon, by the way--I can't believe I forgot to mention it here! I guess it's because all I've seen for the last few days are Wii remotes and superhero costumes :|

I haven't made use of the game vault yet because on my OG 3DS I only have three "extra" StreetPass games (on top of the puzzle and RPG games, whole names are failing me ATM). I could make use of it on my 3DS XL, though...

I still haven't caved for any of the StreetPass games... mostly because I wouldn't be able to really play them much at all. I only get StreetPasses at a local Starbucks whenever I'm there long enough for it to click with my 3DS, and other than that it's a wasteland where I'm at. The fishing one and gardening one look the most interesting to me, though! Is there a way, do you know, that you can cash in your Play Coins or something to play the game for a bit or something, similar to getting puzzle pieces and fighters for Find Mii?

Yes, you can use play coins to call visitors in all of the games, that's what I do since I also live in a place where is hard to get streetpasses. For example, in the gardening game you can use 2 Play coins to call one random Mii you have in your plaza

Oh awesome, then I might have to invest at some point in the future...

Don't quote me on this, Zach, but I'm pretty sure you can use play coins to play most, if not all, of the StreetPass games. I know you can use them to play Ultimate Angler and Battleground Z, but I'm pretty sure you can use them on others, too.

BTW, the flower-growing game (Flower Town, I think) is nice enough, but it's far from my favorite. At the moment, I'd say my favorites are Battleground Z and Monster Manor. After that, I'd say Ultimate Angler and Flower Town are my next faves, with Warrior's Way and Mii Force coming in last.

Thanks for helping out, Luis! :)

Heh. I love Flower Town. I managed to grow one of every plant, and now I'm working on all the jobs. I may or may not be insane enough to try and grow every plant in every possible color.

Plus Mr. Mendel is disturbingly hot for a Mii. lol

Wow, that's dedicated, Terry! I grew at least 25 flowers (one page in the book you're given when you start the game). Are there more than that? Also, yes, I can see where you're coming from RE: Mr. Mendel, though he's perhaps a bit too studious for me ;)

I adore the fishing game, but I'm driven by collecting a set. I really enjoy all the StreetPass games at the moment. If I got more street passes, I'd be happier with all of them, but...eh. I used to get about five a day when I worked at Barnes and Noble, since it was an exchange point. I have no idea where there are more points like that...certainly nowhere where I'm currently traveling.

I hear ya, Justin. Before I started working outside of the
home, I rarely nabbed any StreetPasses. Now I get between two and 10 of them
each weekday. As for where more exchanges may be located near you, do you have
any McDonald's or Starbucks in your 'hood? I believe they usually also contain
relay points, or whatever Nintendo calls the places that collect StreetPass
data…

There are 80 flowers in all.

Holy crap! I guess I've got a long way to go XD

Battleground Z does a good job of keeping my interesting. Different missions is certainly welcome compared to 'defeat this amount of zombies' which I was expecting all the game would offer. ^^

Totally agree with your words about Ultimate Angler. It's fun, just nothing to shout about.
