I think yesterday's Nintendo Direct sold me on Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. (3DS) and Splatoon (Wii U)

I'm especially enamored with Splatoon, which reminds me of something Sega's geniuses might've concocted back in the day, after encountering the footage below during yesterday's Nintendo Direct.

Honestly, what was shown of this upcoming Wii U title at this year's E3 event didn't impress me much. The following video, though, did just the opposite and even caused a huge grin to spread across my face.

As a result, Splatoon, which is being made by the software-development group at Nintendo of Japan that previously produced Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Nintendo Land, is now on my "Wii U wish list"--despite the fact that I still don't own a Wii U.

Who knows, maybe I'll finally buy one when the luscious-looking Kirby and the Rainbow Curse drops in February? (Which would give me a few months to break in the system before Splatoon hits the streets.)

Yesterday's Nintendo Direct also sold me on Project S.T.E.A.M. for 3DS, which will be hitting both physical and virtual store shelves throughout North America this coming spring (alongside The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D, curiously enough).

As was the case with Splatoon, the E3 reveal of Project S.T.E.A.M. left me more than a smidge cold--which is pretty sad when you consider it's being developed by the mad scientists at Intelligent Systems, makers of the Advance Wars, Fire Emblem, Paper Mario and WarioWare franchises.

The trailer (above) shown as part of the most recent Nintendo Direct, though, went a long way toward defrosting me in regard to this tactical title. I don't know if I'd go so far as to say it's now a shoo-in purchase for me, but it's at least a "probable pick-up" at this point.

How about all of you? Did yesterday's Nintendo Direct sell you on Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. or Splatoon or any of the other 3DS or Wii U games that were showcased?

Good grief, the enemies in Splatoon are some kind of creepy. Looks like the product of a three-way between an octopus, a Rabbid, and a Dalek.

Aw, I think they're kind of cute! Of course, maybe that's because they kind of (KIND OF) remind me of the enemies from Day of the Tentacle -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Day_of_the_Tentacle

They definitely caught my attention with these. I hope they actually are fun. I can't get with the jaggy filled faux cellshading graphics of STEAM. The comic book cut scenes are super cool looking though. I'm probably gonna hate reading them on the blurry 3DS XL screen though.

Huh, I kind of like the art style of STEAM, although I wish the colors were a bit softer. Also, you just know the jaggies will be less prevalent while playing the game on an actual 3DS. They nearly always are.

The sad thing is I was really psyched when they announced STEAM, because how could I not want a Valkyria Chronicles/XCom-style game on 3DS where I can fight Lovecraftian aliens? And then I completely forgot it existed until the new Direct. lol

Hey, at least you remembered it eventually :)

They'll still be there though. :-(

Eh, but that's true with pretty much every 3DS title in existence. If that bothered me, I'd sell my 3DS and all of my 3DS games and play high-end PC games or something.

Certain art styles and games make the jaggies show up more. This one with the high contrast between the blacks and color (this sounds racist but, I'm just talking 'bout art) really makes the jaggies worse. Viewtiful Joe, MadWorld, & Okami suffered from this problem when the action on screen was slow. Lucky for me, Viewtiful Joe & MadWorld had enough fast paced moments to hide the jaggies.

Jaggies usually don't bother me but, cellshaded graphics seem to just grate at me when it has jaggies.

Sidebar: MadWorld was a really beautiful game to look at if you ignored the jaggies. I hope it someday ends up in my collection again. I'd love to play it again.

Ah, I see. I guess you're right, although the jaggies still don't really bother me. Hopefully they won't bother you, either, once you have a chance to play the game--assuming you buy it!

Oh, yes, I remember that game looking pretty good. Unfortunately, it didn't really look like my kind of game, gameplay-wise.
