This new SaGa, I mean Legend of Legacy, game continues to look great

Or at least what's shown of it in the video below continues to look great to me.

Of course, I've always been a sucker for games with "unique" aesthetics, and this FuRyu-published RPG, which is set to hit the streets (and the eShop) of Japan early next year, certainly fits that bill.

By the way, in case this is your first encounter with Legend of Legacy, it's being made by many of the same folks who worked on Square Enix's all-but-forgotten SaGa series in years past.

Those games were known for being rather quirky (if not downright crazy), so I'm hoping that will be true of Legend of Legacy in the end as well.

Actually, I'll let you know whether or not that's the case after I sink my teeth into the game, as I recently pre-ordered a copy of it via amiami.com.

The pop-up book animations are iffy for me. I could see them really getting distracting after several hours. I'm quite liking the map though. I'll be paying attention but, I'm not sold yet.

Oh, I understand feeling that way, Chief. I'm not 100 percent sure about the pop-in backgrounds either. Still, at least this game's devs are trying something different.

The map part has me more intrigued than anything else. I actually enjoy that aspect of Etrian Odyssey very much. I get lost in the simplicity and suspense of exploring. Cartographic mistakes and all are enjoyable to me :D.

I'm keen on that aspect, too, Chief. And have you heard that part of this game's "hook" will be to complete dungeon maps and then sell them to other adventurers back in town? I really like the sound of that :)

I did hear about that on twitter. I'm more interested now. :-o

Pretty amazing that the Kickstarter has already reached it's goal. Goes to show just how strong the Earthbound fandom is - and it's still growing.

thegaygamer.com said...

Yeah, me, too. Hopefully this aspect of the game won't make the Japanese version even more difficult for me to play, though!

thegaygamer.com said...

Yep. Like you, I knew yesterday it would reach its goal. I wonder how far it'll end up going?

BTW, in regard to your comment on the strength of the EB fandom: it's sad that even with evidence like this, NOA seems uninterested in giving more of the series to NA gamers. (Ex: EarthBound Zero, Mother 3, etc.)

It really is one huge mystery we will never understand. You'd think Mother 3 on Virtual Console would have been done already - especially after the English fan translation was offered to Nintendo.

It's been this long now - i doubt we'll see anymore Mother related games on the Virtual Console. Just don't want to get my hopes up anymore. :(

Oh. There's a map. I could deal with the pop ups with a persistent map.

thegaygamer.com said...

Oh, yeah, I had the same thought myself while watching this, Justin. Otherwise, I have a feeling I'd get hopelessly lost XD

Yes, when it comes to wanting more EB/Mother games outside of Japan (or even in Japan, at this point), it's best to keep your expectations low :(

Tbh, I'm still surprised we folks in Europe got Earthbound on the Virtual Console. That news made me the happiest person alive, finally having a not so roundabout way of playing one of my favourite games.

Maybe there is some kind of future for us Earthbound/Mother fans that Nintendo have planned (Hghly doubt it though :P ), but for now looks like we'll have to enjoy what the crazy fans have planned for us.

thegaygamer.com said...

Yeah, it's nice that Nintendo throws us westerners a bone once in a while when it comes to EB/Mother :)

You know what I've been dreaming of since this "gen" began? Some sort of Mother remake for the 3DS.

I mean, if Itoi isn't going to make another new Mother game (boo!), why can't Nintendo remake the ones that already exist, especially the first two?

I'm sure a lot of folks absolutely hate that idea, but if anyone can update these games with 3D graphics and yet still retain some/most of the charm of the 2D originals, it's Nintendo...

Adam Lee said...

I'd be all for a remake if we aren't going to see another Mother game. Haven't played the first game, so i'd be all for your idea.

Guessing you have played Mother 1, Bryan? if so, what are your thoughts?

thegaygamer.com said...

Well, Itoi has said on a number of occasions that he's not interested in making another game, period, so unless he has a change of heart, it seems obvious we'll never see another Mother game--from him, at least.

As for Mother 1: I've played about 5 hours of it, I guess, and I really liked what I experience of it. It's very much like EarthBound, but quite a bit more archaic. Anyway, I have to go back to it sometime soon, just to see how much I like the whole thing.

Do you follow Itoi on twitter? We can enjoy the pictures he posts of his cute dog instead of seeing another Mother game. :P

I'll get to Mother 1 once i've finished with Mother 3. Super enjoying that at the moment -which is a lot of fun to play having fangamer's brilliant guide in hand.

thegaygamer.com said...

Hmmm, I don't know if I follow him or not, Adam! I would guess I do, but I follow so many people that it's hard to keep track of them :|

I'm glad to hear you're enjoying Mother 3, by the way. I've really got to get back to that next year. I played a bit of it right after the fan translation came out, but haven't been back since.

Adam Lee said...

The fan translation is incredible. Like, people who aren't even a fan of the Mother series should play this just to see how much hard work went into it. Wow.

thegaygamer.com said...

I agree. Also, people who think they aren't a fan of the series should check out EarthBound/Mother 2 as well. Such a great game. I really can't imagine how people could dislike it!
