To buy or not to buy Super TIME Force (XBLA) tomorrow, that is the question

So, in case you didn't already know, Capybara Games' curious-looking "time-travelling, side-scrolling, run-and-gun shooter," Super TIME Force releases for Xbox 360 (XBLA) and Xbox One tomorrow.

This game has been a long time in coming, and I've been interested in it pretty much since day one. Of course, how could I not be when it features such delicious sprite work?

The problem for me is that I haven't turned on my Xbox 360 since ... I can't remember when. As such, do I really want to spend $15 on a game that I may hesitate to play because it's going to reside on a console (strike one) that gets very little, if any, of my attention these days (strike two)?

How about all of you? Are any of you planning to pick up Super TIME Force tomorrow or at some point thereafter--either for your Xbox 360 or Xbox One?

If you're still on the fence, by the way, or if this is the first you've even heard of Super TIME Force, you may want to watch the video above, which showcases a whopping 50 minutes of gameplay.

  1. Why don't you just download and play the demo first?

Oof, I was ready to do it but the matter of "how close am I to just throwing out the 360 anyway" does give one pause. Probably I'll get the 360 version sooner rather than later and maybe I'll be able to get a PC release later for less for a more "permanent" ownership, if I like the game that much, that is! $15 is not too much for a game I'm really keen on, even if it has a certain temporal quality to it (time travel joke, ho ho).

Speaking of "not too much for a game I'm really keen on," have you checked out Kero Blaster? It's the new one from Pixel, the creator of Cave Story. It's only on PC ($8) and iOS right now, but definitely worth checking out imo. It's a short action shoot-and-jump kind of affair, and I had a blast with it. Not too hard, not too easy, just a really pleasant game about a frog with a "custodial science" career. :)

  3. I'm not planning to throw out my 360 anytime soon, but I'm also not planning to play it anytime soon. Hence the conundrum related to me picking up this particular game :|

Also, in general I'd agree with you that $15 isn't too much for a game I'm keen on, but in this situation $15 seems like quite a bit to me. Were it priced at, say, $5 or $8, I'd pick it up in a heartbeat. Or, if it were on the 3DS eShop and cost even $10, I'd pick it up, too. But being linked to a TV-based console that I rarely play makes $15 seem like a bit too much at the moment.

As for Kero Blaster, I'm very, VERY interested in it, but I've not bit the bullet yet because 1) I don't currently only an iOS-based device and 2) I hate playing games on our PC. So, I'll probably avoid it for a while longer.

If it were on the 3DS eShop right now, though, I'd already own it. I love its art style and the style of gameplay appeals to me, too, so there'd be no hesitation there from me :)

Ah I get it, if you aren't planning on playing it right away it would be easy to "lose it" (sort of) on a console you don't play much! (especially if it turned up on something you liked better!) I think I'll be ready to dive in right away on that one, though. :)

  5. Yes, that's basically it. Even on the 3DS digital games have a tendency to "get lost" for me. Recent ex: Pokemon Battle Trozei, Rusty's Real Deal Baseball and Weapon Shop de Omasse.

Heheh, I have to admit eventually I "cheated" and just watched the rest of Rusty on Youtube.. How many games did you end up picking up? I got most of them but when I realized I had stopped playing it I figured I'd just "wrap it up" already. :)

  7. I've bought three of the games within Rusty's, I think. Maybe four? I was really enjoying them, but then Etrian Odyssey IV took over my life. I'm nearly done with EOIV, though, so hopefully I'll go back to Rusty's after I'm finished. Of course, now The "Denpa" Men 3 is staring at me, and Tomodachi Life is out in a few weeks, so...

I'd ask why you have so little interest in the Xbox 360, but then I remember how Microsoft gleefully ignored the wishes of its customers last year with the Xbox One, and that solved the mystery in a hurry.

I dunno, it's weird being a fan of Japanese games who backed MS in the last console cycle anyway. Out of the three major consoles from the last generation, I liked the 360 the best, but there was a lot of give and take with it. Right now, the good is outweighing the bad thanks to Games with Gold, but there have been times where I regretted my decision. That whole Xbox One unveiling from last year was one of them.

  12. Well, to be honest, Jess, I don't have much interest in my Wii (the system, not the thing between my legs) either.

That said, my 360's always really only been an XBLA machine (save Deadly Premonition, which I seriously have to go back to one of these days), so it was bound to wind up ignored one of these days.

Also, I'm kind of "on the outs" with TV-connected consoles at the moment. I'm sure I'll go back to them eventually, but for the time being I'm having too much fun with the portables I own to give them much attention.

I can't say I was all that bothered by the Xbone reveal, by the way. Granted, that may have had something to do with my lack of interest in MS' 360 follow-up, but even if I had been kind of interested in it I'm not sure the reveal would've bothered me.

What was it about all of that that bothered you?

The fact that the Xbox One seemed built for Microsoft rather than the end user, mainly. No used games? No rentals? An all-seeing, ever-present eye that could detect the number of people in a room and shut off playback of films if there were too many of them? A mandatory online connection with daily DRM checks for games? It was a thousand percent creepy, and even though MS backed away from its original plans, it gave the company a black eye that still hasn't healed. The worst part is that it doesn't seem like Microsoft has learned its lesson. Instead of acknowledging its mistake, spokesmen claimed that Microsoft's (Orwellian) vision didn't sync up with the customers and that it didn't explain its plans well enough. Oh no, we perfectly understood what you wanted to do here. It wasn't the fault of the packaging; it was the dog turd inside that was the problem.

  14. Ah, yes, sorry--I actually forgot about all of that! And, yes, all of it was completely ridiculous--although I'm not sure I'd say I found it to be all that surprising given it's MS we're talking about. So, does this mean you're not going to be getting an Xbone?

  15. I don't know if there's a demo yet. But if it's an official XBLA release there will be a demo version available as well. I will try it if it's ready for download :-)

  16. Ah, well, I guess I'll have a look, too--tomorrow!

  17. Yes, never saying never is a good policy, I think. That said, I think it's a pretty safe bet that I'll never buy an Xbone. A Wii U? Probably (but not surely). PS4? Maybe. Xbone. Nope! I just don't have any interest in it. Period.
