What can I say? Guys with bouncy shovels (knights, especially) bring me to my knees...

Especially if they're pixelated. The guys, I mean. Actually, I kind of like pixelated shovels, too.

Anyway, the pixelated guy (and shovel) that's bringing me to my knees at this particular moment is the one showcased in the latest teaser trailer produced for Yacht Club Games' long-awaited, Duck Tales-esque platformer, Shovel Knight:

Shovel Knight is set to hit Steam as well as the Wii U and 3DS eShops on March 31, by the way. How many of you are planning to buy it--and which version(s) are you going to pick up?

Me, I'm going with the 3DS iteration. No question. Of course, I can't imagine you can go wrong with any version of this one.

Right now I'm leaning on the 3DS version cause 8-bit would probably work better in 3D then HD but at the same time I received a Wii U the other day as a late Christmas gift and I need more games to play on it. I wish Nintendo would add a cross-buy feature to the eshop like Sony did with their e-store.

Yeah, it's sad that Nintendo's still dragging its feet in the area of "cross-buy." Really hope it pulls its head out of its butt in this area soon.

Other than that, yay, another potential owner of the 3DS version :)

This looks unbelievably good! 3DS here as well, I want to be able to take this one around with me wherever I go.

Ah, yes, there's that, too, Ken. March 31 can't come soon enough as far as I'm concerned!

This has suddenly become relevant to me now that I own a Wii U. I don't think cross-buy is the kind of thing Nintendo would do; after all, why charge once for a video game when you can double-dip?

However, I would like to be able to at least take all the games I bought for my Wii and transfer them to the Wii U, *and* play them while the system is in Wii U mode. If I have to switch to the wimpy Wii mode to access them, forget it... it ain't worth the trouble.

Well, yes, I can see why Nintendo wouldn't want to offer cross-buy, Jess, but I think the more other companies offer such options to consumers, the more Nintendo will at least be forced to consider it.

Personally, I don't care about cross-buy between, say, 3DS and Wii U. What I would like is to be able to buy a digital 3DS game and play it on all of my 3DSes.

If I had a Wii U, I'd also be the same boat as you, by the way--in wanting to be able to take games bought on the Wii, move them to the Wii U and play them on the GamePad, etc.

I'm buying the 3DS version, too... possibly more than once, if it looks like something my nieces and nephews would like to play on their machines. lol

Wow, that's nice of you, Terry! I'm going to make sure this sucker is on my XL, because I want to be able to see EVERYTHING this game has to offer :)

Pretty sure I've answered this one before. :) I backed it on Kickstarter and I was all in on 3DS. But now that I have a WiiU, and since I do most of my playing at home anyway, I'm having second thoughts, what with that larger "hand held" screen!

thegaygamer.com said...

Hey, I can't fault you for that, Michael. I'd want to be able to play it on the GamePad, too, if I had a Wii U. That said, I also really like the idea of being able to play this one anywhere, so I won't be complaining about "only" being able to buy the 3DS version :)

You know, I was really skeptical of the Wii U, until I sat down and played Nintendo Land. They're simple games, but they're ingeniously designed, like the Zelda-themed shooter. You actually have to physically turn around and aim with the gamepad to fire at monsters with your bow and arrow. It works beautifully... augmented reality is kind of rare in video games and I've never seen it done like this! The star-throwing game where you hold the gamepad like a tray and fling shuriken by flicking your finger across its surface is really slick too.

I can imagine why some people wouldn't groove with these games; they are just simple on rails light gun shooters when you strip away the technology. But I *like* that genre of games, so much so that Link's Crossbow Training was more entertaining to me than Twilight Princess. It's definitely not a problem for me.

Oh, I'm not skeptical at all when it comes to the Wii U. I l've played the Nintendo Land games and a few others and I really liked them--and I really liked the GamePad, too. The only reason I don't have a Wii U already is that I want to focus on the systems I already own this year--so, mainly the 3DS and some of my retro systems. I fully expect to buy a Wii U eventually. All that said, I'm glad to hear you're enjoying yours!

Yay! Can't wait to hear your thoughts on it -- if you're willing to share them!

Well, the fact that it only cost me $150 at a pawn shop (practically new, and with extra controllers!) certainly helped its appeal. They were really, REALLY eager to unload these things. I should have taken that as an ill omen, but my reaction instead was "Gee, what a deal!"

thegaygamer.com said...

Uh, can you point me to this pawn shop, Jess? I'd def. drop $150 for a practically new Wii U! Gah...

Since you asked (and since I never seem to know when to end a conversation), it was in a college town called Mount Pleasant. I asked for the lowest price they'd take, and they gave me a way-too-good-to-resist deal. There were two Wii Us, but the other one's game pad looked like it had been caught in a hurricane... no way I was going to take a risk on that!

I do wish you the best of luck in finding a great Wii U deal, though. Diligence and a whole lot of luck come in handy when shopping for cheap games. Leave no stone unturned and no store owner unhaggled and you'll get some great stuff for unbelievable prices.

thegaygamer.com said...

Eh, don't worry about it. Obviously I love getting comments--and responding to them. Plus, I rarely know when to end a conversation myself, so I guess we're two peas in a pod :)

Anyway, I'll definitely keep an eye out for Wii U deals, although like I've said before, I'm not planning to pick one up for a while yet.
