I'd prefer a new Chocobo game, but I'll take a mug

Before I get to the focus of this post, which is the adorable Chocobo mug seen below, I have a question to ask the folks at Square Enix: when are you finally going to produce another console or, preferably, handheld game starring Chocobo?

Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon was one of my favorite Wii games, and Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Tales was pretty darn awesome, too. As such, I'd love to see another game that showcases the fluffy little fellow, especially if the game in question were to be made and released for the 3DS.

In the meantime, I guess I'll have to pacify myself by picking up one of the adorable Chocobo mugs being sold by Internet retailer NCS.

(You've got to love the shop's hilarious description of this item: "Whereas the front of the mug features Chocobo's face, the back sports a trail of Chocobo's claw prints on what we assume to be yellow snow.")

Just in case any of you are considering buying one and you'd like to know a bit more about the product before moving ahead with your purchase, each mug is 7.5 centimeters tall, holds 8 ounces of liquid and costs $16.90. Oh, and they'll ship in early February.

Not the same genre, but I've never understood why Square hasn't made a Chocobo racing game, like some kind of Final Fantasy Kart but on Chocobos, obviously!

I thought they already made one, though--back in the PSone days, I think? Regardless, they actually announced a Chocobo racing game for 3DS back when the system was first announced, but it hasn't been mentioned since :|

Oh! I do remember this now that I actually see it. I think it's so removed from my expectations that I must have forced it from memory, like it didn't count! xD

Well, just remember that when they produced the PSone game they didn't exactly have the horsepower to bring your dream to life. They probably could've done that with a 3DS game, but it appears they decided to not even try :|

Nah, it isn't really a power issue, they just came at it from a different angle than what I wanted. I was thinking of something based on FF in general, so there'd be tracks themed after actual game locations (Narshe, Midgard, etc), and more characters who were playable in the games. Riding on Chocobos would up the polycount but they used pre-rendered graphics for this one so that wouldn't have mattered anyway. The actual game is original tracks (including a gosh darn candy mountain!), the characters ride original vehicles, and the characters themselves (besides Squall, I think!) all come from the "Chocobo" franchise, like the dungeon games and comics. Maybe this was better for their target audience, and maybe vehicles limited to birds would have been dumb, but I'd take 2/3 or even 1/3 so long as the 1 was track theme, but they didn't hit any of my desired targets with that one. :(

But yes, more power would have been good, too. :)

That is an insanely cute mug. I've never actually played a game with chocobo's in it, but I've always thought they were sort of cute. :)
And it's such a happy yellow color. I want this mug, haha.

Thanks, GG! You really should try one of the Chocobo games at some point. My main recommendation would be Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Tales for the DS, although you might like Chocobo's Dungeon for Wii, too. (If you have a Wii.) It's a roguelike, but it's not as hardcore as most.

Ah, I hear ya, Michael. Although the game SE produced is a racing game that features Chocobo, that's about it as far as your vision is concerned. I understand that.

Personally, I like your idea a whole lot more than I like the idea the folks at SE eventually went with.

Here's hoping they eventually produce a game that gets closer to realizing your dream :)

Fingers crossed for that 3DS version, I guess! Maybe with a bigger focus on nostalgia lately (like All the Bravest) it's more likely this time. (Come on, Square! Think of the DLC potential!)

thegaygamer.com said...

Oh, my fingers are crossed, too, Michael. Still, my hopes are in check, as the game hasn't been mentioned in a good number of years.

Oh look, they were just talking about it last October! (Bad news though, but what a boast from the original creator!) http://www.joystiq.com/2013/10/11/chocobo-racing-3d-cancelled-creator-says/

thegaygamer.com said...

Oh, my! Yes, what a boast. Also, I completely missed this news that it has officially been canceled. Oh, well :(

I love NCSX! I bought my first ever Sega Saturn import from them... it was Waku Waku 7. It wasn't a great conversion- certainly not on the level of Marvel vs. Street Fighter- but I had a lot of fun with it anyway. What a soundtrack, too!

thegaygamer.com said...

It's funny that I mention NCSX here now and then, as I don't remember the last time I actually bought something from them. I do follow their blog, though, which is where post like this one originate. Anyway, I think I've only heard about Waku Waku 7 in passing. It's kind of a weird fighter, right?

TheGameroomBlitz said...

"Kind of weird" is a bit of an understatement, but yeah. Imagine a battle royale with Japanese pop culture archetypes... one's a dead ringer for Totoro, while another has the deadly elegance of Sephiroth. Waku Waku 7 is great on the Neo-Geo; a little less so on the Saturn, but still quite playable.

I also love NCSX! :D I don't remember what my first purchase from them was, but I do remember that they were really good about replying to my emails and helping me get over my concerns about buying something online. I haven't bought anything from them in a long time but I still have their blog on my feed!

Ah, well, at least my memory isn't as bad as I thought it was ;)

Actually, now that I think of it, I may have bought my gold Pokemon Center 3DS LL from NCSX. Hmmm, how weird the memory is. Anyway, it's good to know others have fond memories (and current opinions) of the company, too :)

OMFG THAT IS AMAZING!

thegaygamer.com said...

Hey there, Matt! Ooooooh, you have the sequel to Chocobo Tales on the DS? How do you like it? I've long considered buying it, but just haven't convinced myself to do it yet. I also want the DS version (update, really) of Chocobo's Dungeon for the Wii...

Matt S said...

It's very different! The card battle system from the first Chocobo Tales is gone, and it's replaced with a disc flicking game thing which is, in my opinion, far more interesting! The minigames are much the same bunch, but the actual art style and narrative are much more interesting too.

As for the Chocobo Dungeon DS game, that's truly a work of art. One of my most played DS games ever.

I'm a chocobo nut, in case you haven't noticed yet ;-)

thegaygamer.com said...

Hmmm, guess I'm going to have to look up some videos of the Chocobo Tales sequel. The disc-flicking game sounds ... intriguing :)

Oh just wanted to let you (and anyone else who might be reading this) that you can get the mug a bit cheaper at Ami Ami! http://www.amiami.com/top/detail/detail?scode=CGD2-77342

thegaygamer.com said...

Thanks, Anne! I'm not going to buy it myself. It's cute, but I prefer the DQ Slime ones--even though they seem to no longer be available :(

apricotsushi said...

I'm not going to buy it either. Admittedly I don't think the chocobo face is that cute here? What's with that little line by the right side of his beak... his mouth? The slime ones were super adorable

thegaygamer.com said...

I think it's cute, but not cute enough to buy :) Also, YES, the slime ones were awesome. Why I ignored those when they were available, I have no idea...
