A few brief thoughts on the latest trio of Nintendo Direct broadcasts

I don't know about you, but the very first thing I did after waking up this morning was check out the Nintendo Directs that were made available to Japanese and North American audiences a few hours ago. (I skipped the European one because I assumed it would be a rehash, more or less, of the other two.)

Anyway, here are a few brief thoughts on the above-mentioned broadcasts (watch the North American one here, and the Japanese one here):

(Sort of) surprisingly, Super Mario 3D World looks smashing--Although I wasn't all that interested in Super Mario 3D World following the game's unveiling at this year's E3, I'm pretty darn interested in it now. Some of the levels shown during today's Nintendo Direct looked absolutely stunning--and, more importantly, looked like a lot of fun, too. The question is: will I ever get my husband to play it along with me? Thankfully, I have a feeling it'll be a blast while played solo, too.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze delayed--The only news related to this Wii U title is that it's release--originally scheduled for later this year--has been pushed to February. That doesn't bother me too much, as I'm not planning on picking it up (I liked Donkey Kong Country Returns, but not enough to buy a sequel), but I know a lot of people were hoping to get their paws on it this holiday season.

The 3DS is really going to suck next year--In a good way, that is--thanks to the new Kirby game that's scheduled for release at some point in 2014. Anyway, this latest entry in the long-running Kirby series--which I believe will be called Kirby: Triple Deluxe in Japan--looks a lot like Kirby's Return to Dream Land, which is a very good thing, in my opinion. That said, I wouldn't mind at all if Nintendo announced a follow-up to Kirby's Epic Yarn for Wii U sometime next year.

Looks like I'll get my yearly dose of Daigasso! Band Brothers sooner than expected--The highlight of the Japanese Nintendo Direct (which covered a lot of the same ground as its North American counterpart) for yours truly: the news that this third entry in the Daigasso! Band Brothers series--called Daigasso! Band Brothers P--will hit the streets in its home country on Nov. 14. Unfortunately, that's about all I got out of this portion of the broadcast--although I think the major revelation here was supposed to be that folks will be able to go on line to access or download a ton of additional tunes. That aspect of the title likely will be lost on me, but that's OK--the 100 or so songs that are supposed to be included on the cart should be more than enough for me.

To those of you who also checked out one or more of this morning's Nintendo Direct broadcasts: which games stuck out at you, if any?

Super Mario 3D World looks great, and I need to buy more controllers so I can play it with my nieces and nephews.

I especially got a kick out of the brief glimpse of being able to carry around a Piranha Plant to gobble enemies. It reminded me of the section of Link's Awakening where you can take the Chain Chomp for a walk and let him eat stuff.

Drew must be thrilled that there was even more Super Mario Bros. 2 / USA references in this trailer. The desert looks straight outta' that game. And also the FryGuy esque enemies which look like they have his sunglasses or, something. I'm sorry Im being too obscure.

or a baby Yoshi in SMBW.

Oh, yeah, I liked that part, too, Terry. I also just liked the looks of some of the levels shown--many of which looked a LOT better than what was shown at E3, IMO.

thegaygamer (Bryan) said...

Yes, that too :)

Yes, you're probably right about Drew. That said, I'll bet he wishes it was even more of a throwback to SMB2/USA. I know I do! Why on earth does Nintendo refuse to give us a real update of that game?

Okay, I've seen the video now. Yes, I'm impressed with the SMB2-ness of it all. I was hoping for Wart, but I'll take this -- gladly.

Wha? You're not into the new DKC Returns? But Dixie. And SMB2-inspired vegetable-chucking!

thegaygamer (Bryan) said...

I really want Wart to return, too, Drew. Along with Shy Guy and some of the other SMB2 enemies and characters. Still, this looks great to my eyes.

Eh, we'll see, Drew. I liked DKCR well enough, but not enough to finish it. Also, I far preferred NSMBW and the two Kirby games on Wii to it. Oh, and then there's the fact that I'm going to have an absolute shitload of games to buy after I finally acquire a Wii U, so there's really no reason/need to add another to the pile--at least right now.

The new 3D world trailer made me interested in the game also. The E3 reveal made it look like it was just going to be 3D Land with different levels, multi-player, and clear pipes but this trailer showed those more to World than that. Also I know some people are disappointed that the soundtrack isn't like Galaxy but I'm enjoying it's what I guess you would call big band sound. I'm just glad they're using actual instruments instead of midi impersonators.

Looks like the Wii U is going to be the console to go for when playing platformers what with it having New Super Mario Bros. U, New Super Luigi U, Super Mario 3D World, Donkey kong Tropical Freeze, Sonic Lost World, and Rayman Legends (I know it's also on 360/PS3/Vita/PC but it was originally going to be exclusive and reviews say you can tell it was designed of the Wii U) not to mention indie platformers.

Oh, yes, I really like what we heard of the soundtrack in this game, Sam. Also, I like it when Nintendo tries something different with Mario soundtracks--as opposed to reusing the same songs over and over and over again.

As for the Wii U being the go-to place for platformers this time around: I can' t disagree with you there, either. Of course, the Wii was the go-to place for platformers last generation, so I guess it shouldn't be too surprising to see them popping up on the Wii this gen, too.

I've been pumped for 3D World, as you know, but this got me even more excited! I've felt like 3DW had that same understated quality that 3DL had, not really the "impressive" game that Nintendo needs, the way Galaxy was (even though I prefer 3DL!) but maybe not, with all the cool new features and that soundtrack, and Bowser's purple car (did he get that from Wario?), it's definitely "pushing" a little further. I just hope there are some level themes that resemble that jazzy theme song!

Kirby is also looking really attractive! I often feel like I could take or leave Kirby, but there was a lot of cool stuff going on in that trailer, I feel kinda keen on this one, the motion and action going on as Kirby goes through these screens is really appealing.

I think SM3DW looks like a good mix of Galaxy and SM3DL myself--although, sadly, I'm not as experienced with 3DL as I should be, so I may be way off-base there.

Regardless, I'm loving the look of 3D World, and now I'm think it'll do quite well in North America, especially -- perhaps better than Galaxy in the long run? Nintendo will have to boost sales of Wii U hardware for that to happen, though.

As for Kirby: I'm totally in love with it at the moment. It looks like Kirby's Return to Dream Land (for Wii), but better. Cuter. Softer. And that switching levels stuff? Brilliant!

Seriously, I'm more stoked for Kirby than I probably should be at the moment :)

Is it just me, or does the voice acting in the NOA Bravely Default trailer sound different than the NOE trailer? I still don't understand why some of the voices have a lower sound quality, too.

As for Super Mario 3D World, the E3 trailer made me interested in the game, but I figured it would be a standard Mario game. This new trailer is like Nintendo was saying "Remember when Mario games were weird? Well here's a bunch of new, weird stuff!" I greatly approve of the new trailer. It looks fun.

thegaygamer (Bryan) said...

Hmmm, I don't know about Bravely Default, Will. The voices sounded the same to me, or at least similar enough that I didn't notice a difference.

As for SM3DW: YES! I love that it looked kind of weird. Very much looking forward to playing this game later this year :)
