Am I a bad person if I buy Shin Megami Tensei IV and not Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers?

The thing is, I originally planned to buy both of these Atlus-made RPGs.

That was before the Great 3DS Game Flood of 2013 occurred, though--a rather long-lasting flood that's already swept Etrian Odyssey IV, Fire Emblem: Awakening, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon and Touch Detective: Funghi's Big Breed into my path and will soon add Animal Crossing: New Leaf to the growing pile of rubble at my feet.

Because I've only sunk a few hours into Fire Emblem: Awakening and Touch Detective: Funghi's Big Breed and I've yet to even stick Etrian Odyssey IV or Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon into my 3DS, I've decided to pass on Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers, which will be released throughout North America on April 16, for the time being.

I won't be passing on the just-announced-for-North-American-release Shin Megami Tensei IV, though--despite the fact that publisher Atlus USA will be shipping it sometime this summer (apparently with a premium-sized price tag attached to it).

Full disclosure: I've never played a mainline Shin Megami Tensei title (as opposed to spin-offs like the Persona games), so I'm a bit nervous that I'll be thrown into the deep end with this release, but I'm going to give it the old college try anyway.

Are any of you similarly stoked by this announcement? If so, have you played any of the previous entries in the series, or will this be your first time at the Shin Megami Tensei rodeo, too?

I'm thinking of doing the same. I was planning on getting Etrian Odyssey IV, but with Soul Hackers coming out, I decided that if I was going to play one dungeon crawler, I'd rather it be one that's different from other games I've played before. That said, the Soul Hackers trailers have been really lackluster in every respect, and I'm rather good at determining what sort of games I'll enjoy. And now with the SMT IV announcement, I'll probably pass on Soul Hackers, as the former sounds more up my alley, and there are so many long, grindy, demony dungeon crawlers a person can possibly consume. I've never really enjoyed any of the SMT games I've played though, so I might just pass on 'em all!

Ah, well, at least I'm not alone :)

I thought the Soul Hackers trailers looked OK, by the way, although some of that may have been related to the fact that I've been interested in this game since I heard about the original version long ago.

Regardless, though, I think SMT IV looks better in every way, so I don't feel *too* bad for passing on Soul Hackers in favor of SMT IV.

Anyway, it'll be interesting to see which games you wind up with--if any of them!

I only played SMG Persona 2, 3, 4, Lucifers Call (best SMT game imo) and Devil Summoner (which I really hated). So I never had the chance to try a title of the main-series but I just HAVE to get this game òó.

Oh I'll be sooo mad if this doesn't get to Europe.

This is a warning Atlus! DON'T SCREW THAT!
There are so many great announcements the last weeks. Just like Fantasy Life, Soul Sacrifice, Muramasa Rebirth and Harmo Knight (which I bought troday). Now there are only Youkai Watch and Bravely Default left. Ok so Muramasa and SMT IV have only been announced for NA but I try to think positive. That's a good sign.

I have to imagine you guys will get this one, Lizzi. Hopefully you'll get full retail releases and not just digital ones, although I'm guessing you'll take whatever you can get, right?

One possibly bad piece of news for you related to SMT IV: apparently it's going to cost $50 in the US, which is pretty outrageous for a 3DS game and which likely means it's going to be even more expensive in your country :(

I can't believe how expensive new games are. But sadly I'm getting used to it. And if it would cost 70€, I guess I still would buy it.
I'm too excited about it xD
But I can't explain myself why Bravely Default takes so much time to get here.

I'm certainly not used to how expensive games are becoming these days, Lizzi--and games here are considerably cheaper than they are there :|

As for Bravely Default: I think the delay in its localization has far less to do with any difficulties SE may be experiencing in terms of its translation and more to do with SE not being sure if it wants to release it overseas.

Haha, Bryan, we're on a similar wavelength yet again! I'm thinking of doing the exact same thing. Like Matt and you already mentioned, I'm considering skipping Soul Hackers since I already nabbed Etrian Odyssey IV and just sticking with SMT IV. I do really like the cyberpunk vibe of Soul Hackers, but I think there are only so many first-person dungeon crawlers I can play...

The *only* reason I'm thinking I might want to pick it up is because Atlus is so notorious for letting these games go out of print! I don't want to get into a situation where I want to play it but can't find it anywhere. Still, I think it's going up on the eShop, so if worse came to worse I could always get it there. That said, I have so many games piling up that I'd probably never have time for it anyway! Hah!

As for my experience with SMT: I've played a bit of both Nocturne and Devil Summoner: Raido Kuzunoha vs. the Soulless Army, but that's it! Nocturne really kicked my butt with the difficulty level (and I was pretty young when I played), so I'll admit I'm a tad apprehensive of how much I'll enjoy SMT IV, too. But I'm ready to give it the old college try!

Oh, I think we're on the same page quite a bit, don't you, Anne? As long as we're not talking about Mario games, I mean ;)

Seriously, though, I also like the cyberpunk vibe present in Soul Hackers. That said, I'm not willing to pick it up and add it to my ever-growing backlog at the moment just because of that.

Like you said, it should be sold via the eShop, so at least that will keep us from having to spend $60 or $80 on new retail copies should they go out of print (which they surely will)--should we ever decide to buy the game down the line, I mean.

I'm glad to hear you've at least played a few SMT games before this one, BTW. If I could understand Japanese, I'd probably give one of the Famicom or Super Fami SMTs a try before IV comes out, but that certainly isn't going to be possible. Maybe someday?

Oh, and I won't mind at all if SMT IV is tough-as-nails. My only worry at this point is that some of the series' other vaunted aspects--like the monster-fusing system--may be overwhelming for a noob like me. Hopefully not, but I guess we'll find out in a few months!

*sigh* who knows when or if I'll ever see either game :( at least you have the choice...
