I'm taking a rain check RE: this month's 'Bye-Bye, Backlog' selection

You may have noticed that I've yet to publish a "My Month with ..." post in March. That's because I've decided to step away from my backlogathon for the time being.

Don't worry, I plan to get back to it again in April, but for the next few weeks I'm going to focus on the small pile of 3DS games that either have already found their way to my doorstep (expect to read about one of them tomorrow, by the way) or will do so soon instead.

I'm also going to spend some quality time with a game I haven't played in ages--with that game being Shigesato Itoi's magnificent EarthBound (or Mother 2 to you purists).

Why have I decided to turn back the clock and play through this Americana-themed RPG like it's 1995 once again? To be painfully honest, it's because I've never actually seen this game's end credits (gasp!) and I'd finally like to do so.

All of you fellow EarthBound fans should be happy to hear that I'm already off to a good start. After playing the game for a few (four or five, maybe?) hours this weekend, I've reached Peaceful Rest Valley and I'm not too far away from rescuing Paula and putting my days as a lonesome adventurer behind me.

I have no idea how much more of the game I'll be able to play this week given my real-life workload and my desire to continue working my way through Fire Emblem: Awakening, but I think I'll be able to put at least a few additional hours into it.

In the meantime, do any of you consider yourself to be EarthBound fans? If so, what are some of your favorite memories as they relate to this charmingly humorous and heartwarming title?

This is, hands down, my favorite game of all time. The art style is flawless; the story is dynamite; the characters are fascinating and hilarious. I don't know of a single flaw. Honestly. I'm about as big an Earthbound fanboy as a person can be.

Oh, yes, Justin, I remember you saying you're a bag EB fan. And, really, how can anyone not be? I'm sure some can't stand the graphics, of course, but those folks aren't really worth worrying about, are they? Anyway, I'm loving it so far. I have a feeling I'm going to race through this faster than I initially thought I would :)

Is it your first attempt at a full playthrough?

Do you mean is this my first time playing the game? No. I played through a good chunk of the game back in my teens, and I put a small dent into it during a second attempt a few years ago. This time, though, I'm going to make it all the way through--no ifs, ands or buts!

I have to admit that I think it's kind of nuts that I didn't finish it during either of my previous playthroughs, as I completely loved what I experienced each time.

Of course, I've done the same thing with other games I've loved over the years: the first Dragon Quest, Pokemon Black/White and Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light among them.

OMG! I really wish I could get a PAL-Version of this great game... Earthbound is on the top of my WANTED-list. Oh I wish there was some hope left. :-(

Hey Bryan look at this:

Seems like Fantasy Life is on its way to Australia.
Hopefully there will be some good news for us too soon.

I can't NOT race through...although Magicant always makes me want to slam my fist into something. Difficulty spike...

I hear ya, Justin. I will vow to continue making my way through the game even after I hit a difficulty spike or after I find myself facing a boss that puts up more resistance than I'd like :)

I always forget that you Europeans never got this game. How sad :(

I have a feeling, though, that if we ever get it again -- via 3DS or Wii U VC, for instance -- you will, too. The question is: will we ever get it again?

As for that news that Australia's supposedly getting Fantasy Life later this year: I hope it's true. I really, really, really want to play that game!

Oh I hope there will be a remake someday! And I would appreciate it if it would be a 2D version as the original.
As for Fantasy Life: I really want this games as much as you do. It's one of the games I can't stop think about (nearly as much as I think about Animal Crossing NL) and search every day for good news about it.

Yeah, a remake would be great :) You know what I'd like to see, actually? A remake that makes the characters, enemies, items, etc., look like they're made out of clay--like they do in the game's manual.

As for Fantasy Life: you and I can be the western world's two-person "Fantasy Life Supporters Club" :) Seriously, though, here's hoping it's released outside of Japan--and soon!

Retr0gamer got me to play it, it's definitely one of my favourite games so really happy to see more people play it.

Afternoons in college my classmates wanted to go drink and kinda got left out. I had moved out and no one was at the house til late so just played Earthbound, kept me company (sad! lol)

I don't think that's a sad story, Triseratops--especially since it involves you enjoying the hell out of EarthBound :)

I'm the kind of guy who calls it "Mother 2" so I don't have to try and fail to pronounce the word "Earth".

First played and finished it on a emulator back when Mother 3 (which I have a cartridge of) was being fantranslated. I've been replaying it every now and then in my Android smartphone.

I don't really have any memories worth writing about in regards to Earthbound, but it is indeed a cool game with clever gameplay mechanics and plot points, so I hope the Wii U version gets released in the west sometime.

Hello, Hyper Emerson :) I hope the Wii U version makes its way westward, too. I have no idea how likely or unlikely this is at this point, but I hope Nintendo can make it happen regardless.
