Flipnote Studio's coming to the 3DS, y'all!

One of the only reasons I seriously considered picking up a DSi back when the system was the new kid on the portable-gaming block was that it gave owners access to the gloriously creative app known in North America as Flipnote Studio.

Well, it appears an updated version of that piece of digital software will soon be made available to folks who have 3DSes and 3DS XLs.

According to yesterday's mini (Japanese) Nintendo Direct, below, Flipnote Studio 3D will hit the 3DS eShop as a free download sometime this summer.

Beyond that, the big news for me in regards to this release is that it will allow users to export their creations as animated GIFs, a series of GIFs or AVI movie files.

For more information about what's set to be included in this iteration of Flipnote Studio, check out neogaf.com and nintendoeverything.com.

UPDATE: for all of you who'd prefer to understand what's being said in this "Nintendo Direct mini," an English version (published by Nintendo of Europe, it seems) can be found here.

  1. Uwaaaah! I love such useful apps for handhelds!

I already loved the nintendo mail app for the 3DS.

Oh I really hope it will hit the european e-shop soon! BTW Harmo Knight will be released sometime in march! I'm looking forward to it :D

  3. You and me both, Lizzi! I have a feeling all of us will be getting this app this summer, although it's only been announced for Japan so far.

I'm really looking forward to Harmo Knight, too, by the way. It's released here on the 28th, so not too far away! Hopefully you get it soon after.

  4. Ha ha! Does this mean you enjoyed the DSi version, Justin? Or are you like me and you've always *wanted* to play with the DSi version? Either way, I agree :)

  5. Between this and tomorrow's impending announcement of the Pikachu 3DS XL coming to North America, it's a good day.

  6. Tomorrow's impending announcement of the Pikachu 3DS XL coming to North America? Did I miss something again?

I mean, I know the system was shown in the most recent Pokemon Mystery Dungeon ad, which suggested it's on its way, but are there rumblings it's actually going to be announced tomorrow?

  7. The official Pokemon Twitter account posted this about 30 minute ago: Pika pika! We've got some exciting news for Pikachu fans coming up tomorrow! pic.twitter.com/fXEOuaUiK2

  8. Ah! I think you may be right then! Are you planning to pick up one of these systems? I think they're cute, but I'll be passing myself. I'm glad others will be able to get their hands on them, though :)

  9. AWWWWW! That's so great :D

I love my Pikachu 3DS XL! Even though it's kinda unpopular here in Germany (don't know anything about the other EU-countires).

But I have to say one bad thing about the Pikachu 3DS XL in comparison to the normal 3DS XL:

when you open the 3DS XL the display snaps into place, but this always sounds and feels like you're going to break it if you coninue pushing the display (which is never getting better). After a while the display begins to wobble when it's opened more than a normal 3DS XL display. This really bothers me.

The Pikachu edition looks so super-cute but this is just a pain in the ass.

  10. Ah, yes, the snapping of the display. It is kind of shocking, especially at first, isn't it? It isn't a deal breaker for me, but I can understand how/why you'd hate it, Lizzi.

  11. I haven't decided yet. I certainly want one -- after picking up Meloetta at GameStop, I now have all 649 Pokemon -- but my entertainment budget is blown for awhile after buying a Wii U and next week's release of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate.

  12. Yes and (like I said) it's way worse with the Pikachu Edition! My boyfriend owns a normal blue 3DS XL an I compared it. It's just awful!

  13. Oh, i completely forgot about Meloetta! Of course, I don't have Black 2 or White 2, so I guess it's kind of a moot point, isn't it?

Also, I understand about having a blown entertainment budget! At least you'll have your Wii U and MH3U even if you don't wind up picking up a Pikachu XL, right?

  14. Huh! I wonder why that is?

  15. If you have the first Black and White games, you can still get her. I got one for each cartridge. *cough* lol

  16. Oh! I didn't know that. But I have to go to a Gamestop to get her, right?

  17. Well, I guess I'll have to find a Gamestop somewhere near me. There has to be one somewhere in Seattle...

  18. I've never heard of Flipnote Studio before, but I'll be interested to try it. It looks pretty great!

  19. It was a pretty interesting piece of software released for the DSi. I'm not sure I'll be able to do anything worthwhile with it, but I'm going to give it a try!
