My Month with Chulip, Part 4

Well, the first month of my "Bye-Bye, Backlog" project is over and done with. How did I do? Not so well if you were hoping I'd actually finish my first selection--that being Natsume's odder-than-odd PS2 title, Chulip.

Still, I gave it my best shot and put a good 12 to 15 hours into this sucker, which is saying a lot when you consider how completely obtuse Chulip tends to be.

Actually, that's the main reason I've yet to finish it. Although I absolutely loved the game when I started playing it, over time it came to feel like a chore--thanks in large part to the fact that getting to its end credits seems to be all but impossible without the use of a guide or FAQ.

Don't get me wrong: I'm usually not against calling on such things. In the case of Chulip, though, it often feels like I'm tethered to them (as in, I have to turn to them over and over again in order to make any real progress), which I can't help but find a bit (or a lot) irksome.

Am I giving up on this title now that January's over? Not at all. Yes, my focus throughout February will be on my second "Bye-Bye, Backlog" selection (which I'll reveal first thing tomorrow), but I'll also continue to spend some time with this one until I've "beaten" it.

So, expect to see a "Great Gaymathon" review of this Punchline-made game sometime between now and the end of the month. In the meantime, look for weekly updates about my February "Bye-Bye, Backlog" selection starting this Sunday.

I wonder if there's something about this game that makes it sit unplayed for ages? I've got a copy that's been in my closet, in shrinkwrap, for about two years now. One of these days.

Don't torture yourself over it though--if a game feels like work and you aren't getting paid to play it, move on! That's why I could never play MMORPGs for longer than a couple weeks.

I have a feeling a lot of people bought/buy the game due to its reputation for being really weird, Simply_Awful. Once it arrives, they put it on the shelf or wherever they house their games and then tell themselves, "one of these days." The only problem is, that day never comes.

As for me not torturing myself by continuing to play this game: it isn't torture, really. Also, I *want* to finish it and see how it ends, etc. Sure, it's become a bit of a pain, but I'm willing to put up with it for a little while longer.

Can't wait to see what February brings Bry as your posts for this months game, Chulip, were thoroughly entertaining!

P.S. I have shot and am currently in the process of editing footage for the unboxing of a game. If no problems are encountered, I don't think it's unrealistic to say that it will be up by tomorrow morning.

Thanks, Billy! I'm glad at least a few people found them entertaining :)

As for your unboxing video: that's great! Let me know if/when it's posted, OK?

Yep, I will do Bry!

Aww man, it didn't upload in it's highest quality cos I mucked up some settings :(. I'll try and rectify it later but you should watch it anyway :). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFHxdXxY1QA

Ah, thanks for letting me know, Billy! And that's a very nice video, I might add :) Have you played the game yet? I look forward to hearing your opinions of it, regardless, as it's definitely a game that has piqued my curiosity.

Nope, and I shan't get a chance to til at least tomorrow - having retro gaming night round my friend's place! I'm very tempted to take Ni No Kuni to his but it doesn't really count as retro, it'd ruin the theme! XD.

Thanks for watching my video Bry, you're one of the first to see it as I haven't made it known to many people yet, not even Anne can you believe! I'll make another video as soon as possible and review the game as best I can!

No worries, get to it when you can. Your retro-gaming night sounds fun, by the way! Enjoy it, and then get to playing Ni no Kuni :P

Hooray! I picked Epic Mickey as my February game...but...after another hour playing it, I realized why I put it down. It's getting the proverbial axe. I'll finish Uncharted 2 instead...and FFIX.

Oh, I forgot that you were going to re-tackle Epic Mickey. Sorry to hear it just isn't a game that sits well with you, BTW. I fully support giving up on games that aren't tripping your trigger, of course. Hopefully I won't run into too many of those during this little project :)
