From the back of my boyhood closet, part four

I know what many of you will think when you read what my fourth "find" was while digging through my childhood closet a few months ago: That's it?

Yes, that's it. For some reason, though, finding a complete-in-box copy of Pokémon Red really made me happy. Not "I've just won the lottery" happy, mind you, but definitely "oh, cool, a game I used to like when I was younger" happy.

I think part of my happiness can be attributed to nostalgia (I played the hell out of this game, y'all) and another part of it can be attributed to the fact that the game's cartridge is a most wonderful cherry red.

One final reason for my over-the-moon-ness upon finding the copy of Pokémon Red in the photo above: Its instruction manual and supporting brochures were stuffed inside the box, just where I probably left them however many years ago.

That's important because I had forgotten how extensive this game's manual was. It's huge! Not only that, but it includes a ton of information and illustrations. I guess we all know which game will serve as the focus of a future "Manual Stimulation" post.

Can't wait to see the manual! I'm sure I have mine in a box somewhere...but I was a keep-the-manual-throw-everything-else-away kind of kid...otherwise I'd have some real treasures at this point...

I actually just unearthed MY copy and started playing it a month or so ago. I forgot how much I used to love it.

Oh, I'll bet you *would* have some treasures, Justin! Don't you still have your original NES and games? Jealous!

I really should re-play this one, too. I loved it back in the day. I'm pretty sure I had a copy of Blue, too. I wonder where that went??

I love Pokemon, so I would've found this amazing! I lost my old copy of Yellow so I had to buy a new one for nostalgia. Although, I play the new ones of course, I'm currently replaying SoulSilver for a bit of a nostalgia buzz (Always find myself playing a Pokemon game this time of year).

A boxed copy of Red is super nice, especially considering many used copies are busted thanks to the Missingno glitch.

Hey there, chaosyoshimage! I've never heard of this glitch. May have to look it up. I don't remember ever running into any problems while playing this particular copy, though, so hopefully it's OK...

The box is still in pretty nice shape too. I still remember getting my copy of Pokemon Blue

Yep, the box is in pretty good shape, Adam. The top flap was a bit warped, but sitting a heavy book on top of it for a bit helped quite a lot :)

So, you had Pokemon Blue back in the day, eh? I couldn't turn down the cherry-red cart of Red, myself. Like I said earlier, though, I think I owned Blue at one point, too. Never played Yellow, though. Boo :(

Awesome game! I was addicted to Pokemon and would even take my Gameboy to school to play it while I'm on the bus. I still have the Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, and Silver version Pokemon games and I'm pretty sure I have the manuals still in their box.

I've been wanting to play some Pokemon. I think I'm going to get my Gameboy Advance and play one of them just to remember how I got when I played it when I was a kid.

I own three Pokemon games, including Red, but am still yet to play any.

I just end up picking them up really cheap or in trades.

Hello again, TGG! Always nice to see you around here. Anyway, I'm impressed that you still have all your old Pokemon games! Also, I think your idea of pulling out and playing one of them soon sounds like a good idea. Maybe I should go back to Emerald -- a game I started long, long ago but never finished :(

I'm amazed you've never given them a go, dste! Really, they're quite a bit more enjoyable than you may be imagining. I especially liked Black/White, I have to say, so if you have that one I'd highly recommend trying it. I quite liked Red, too, although I'm not sure how it's held up over the years...

I do plan to play them but always end up playing something else. I have Diamond on the DS so will most likely start with that one as I can play on the journey to and from work.

I'll be interested to hear what you think of Diamond, dste. I have Pearl and played it for a bit, but for some reason it just didn't grab me. I think it may have been the slow pace? Black/White was much more compelling, regardless. Anyway, best of luck to you on your maiden Pokemon journey :)

Wow, that's pretty amazing! A Pokemon Red kinda guy, eh? I opted for Blue but now I think I'd rather Red just for the cherry red cartridge you mentioned.

Unfortunately, I don't have my copy of Blue anymore... I have absolutely no idea what happened to it. I even bought Gold, but the only thing left now is the manual. I guess I was good at losing things as a kid? I don't even remember, but it's a shame...

You know, Anne, I can't even remember why I chose Red over Blue back in the day. I'm guessing it was due to the color -- and/or the ability to play with Charmander -- but who knows?

I fully understand having a tendency to lose things as a kid, though. Like I said earlier, I can't find my copy of Blue either. Also, I found a box for Pokemon Pinball -- in perfect condition, no less -- but no cartridge while I was home at Christmas. Drat!

If it's still got the manual and everything, do you think it'd be worth much of anything? I sold all my Japanese copies recently, fairly easy. Blue, Green, Yellow etc. And yeah the manual. All that artwork by Ken Sugmori, who is great. afsbgfsdbvn.

SUIKA: I doubt it's worth much even with the box, manual and everything else -- mainly because so many copies of this sucker were bought/sold back in the day.

As for the manual being full of awesome artwork: I agree! Plus, it's HUGE. It's almost like a mini Player's Guide.
