I've rarely met a Japanese gaming commercial I didn't like. Retro ones, especially. I think it's because so many of them are equal parts earnest and, well, bat-shit crazy.
The one below, for the Famicom Disk System version of Metroid, is a good example, although it's definitely more serious than silly.
This ad was nabbed from the recently launched tumblog known as FC.CM ("a collection of commercials relating to the Nintendo Famicom"), by the way.
If you decide to pay it a visit (and I sincerely hope you will), be sure to check out the commercial for the Korean version of the Famicom/NES (called the Hyundai Comboy).

Never knew Samus's suit was steam powered back in the late 80's :P. But forgive me for being late on talking about Solatorobo. I actually have completed the game as of this post and it was tons of fun. The second half of the game is REALLY where things get interesting and its worth the price of admission alone. It was a solid title overall, but don't expect a difficult game (But honestly that's quite a minor gripe as the rest of the game is so damn enjoyable that you'll care less *least how that was for me.*) The story is quite a ride, the characters are fun and memorable and the music was pretty relaxing. I say it comes HIGHLY recommended. Hope that'll make up for my tardiness. :)
Yeah, that suit in the ad is quite ... interesting, isn't it?
As for Solatorobo: Thanks for sharing your impressions! I really have to nab a copy of it sooner rather than later.
I also want to grab a copy of the PS1 original off of eBay at some point. I seem to remember playing it back in the day, but I don't remember much about it now.
Tail Concerto is more a spiritual prequel rather than a full blown prequel. You do get to see some characters from the game in Solatorobo to help cement that they're part of the same world which is a really nice touch. And heres hoping you do find it. Its just as fun as Solatorobo. But not from personal experience as I'm watching a play through of the game
Whether I buy a copy of Tail Concerto or not will come down to whether or not I can find a cheap-ish copy of it on eBay. I'm probably not going to be willing to spend $50 on it, but $25 or so might seem acceptable.
I watched some playthroughs of the game on YouTube recently, too. It certainly looks good for a polygonal PS1 title, IMO.
I understand. I actually now a game shop around my parts that sells it for a very reasonable 30 dollars.
That's not a bad price at all! I'm surprised you haven't nabbed it for yourself :)
Whoa. The real life jump to in-game sprite is pretty much amazing.
Ha! Yes, I liked that, too :)
That is a good one, I like the jump into the game scene too.
I spent a bit of time browsing the FC CM blog and really enjoy those old commercials. Its kind of addictive.
It *is* addictive, Sean! Honestly, I hope the person running it keeps it up, as I love watching these old ads. I'd also love it if someone made tumblogs that curated PC Engine or Super Famicom commercials. I'd make one myself, but two blogs is enough for me, I think :)
