I mean, why is the NES in the t-shirt design seen below high-fiving a Genesis? Shouldn't the NES be high-fiving an SNES instead? I know some will suggest that it should be high-fiving a Master System, but that would be even more confusing to me than the NES high-fiving a Genesis.
Anyway, let's save that mind-numbing discussion for another day. Instead, let's talk about the t-shirt above, which was designed by Roger Biersborn. Isn't it cute? If you agree, and if you're dying to add another game-related t-shirt to your collection, head on over to TeeFury.com soon, because it'll only be sold (for $10) for the next 22 or so hours.
It's a cute image, but the Genesis/Mega Drive is completely wrong-
ReplyDelete*Picky Sega fan incoming*
It looks like the controller ports are on the side edge of the unit, the vents are underneath the cart slot rather than along the edge, and the headphone/volume section is on the wrong side.
I don't want to be too mean about a cute illustration, but if I was going to buy a shirt with a console on it I'd want the console to at least be vaguely accurate ^^~
*end of picky rant*
I can't say I blame the outcry for accuracy. It appears as though the person who designed this shirt (however cute it may be), has probably never seen a Sega Genesis in real life. That or they thought they could throw the controller ports, buttons, and switches wherever the hell they wanted and have it high-five its major competitor without anybody crying foul.
ReplyDeleteThat said, it is a cute shirt.
I think it's a nice change from the console wars, which in the NES/SNES & Genesis era made me way sad.
ReplyDeleteOh, Kimimi, I understand the rant :) I noticed that, too, and noticed that the NES seems a bit off as well (although not as much as the Genesis). I guess the artist just thought he'd take some creative freedoms with the design?
ReplyDeleteHey there, Retronick! The Genesis design seems to be close enough to reality that the person who created the design must have at least looked at a real-life Genesis before putting pen to paper, at least IMO. Regardless, it's strange that it's so "off." I guess the artist didn't think anyone would care. Boy, was he wrong! :P
ReplyDeleteI agree, Justin. I loved all of the systems back then and couldn't understand why there had to be "Nintendo fans" and "Sega fans." Actually, I can understand why someone would be more of a fan of one company than the other, but why does it have to automatically mean you hate the other? Can't we all just get along?!?
ReplyDelete*shouts AMEN, PREACH IT! from the congregation*
ReplyDeleteI remember being a true Sega-only fan back in the early 90's... for about a week or two. A good game is a good game, I honestly don't see why the plastic box you need to run it should matter.
ReplyDeleteNothing wrong with preferences mind, just not to the exclusion of all else.
Oh and a thought about the shirt - it's obviously designed to specifically appeal to retro gamers, so I would have thought getting your consoles right would have been important even if only from a money making point of view :)
Ha ha! AMEN, Justin. AMEN!!
ReplyDeleteHello again, Kimimi! Oh, I'm with you -- actually I was a full-on Nintendo/NES fan as a kid and detested the Master System at the time. When the 16-bit era came around, though, I developed a love for all of the available systems -- the Genesis, the SNES and the TG-16.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, all that said, I agree that there's nothing wrong with having preferences -- as long as you don't take them too far and turn your nose up at everything else. Anyone who has spent any amount of time on this blog has likely (hopefully) figured out that I have my preferences, for instance. I just don't understand why that typically has to mean that I/you think everything else sucks, etc.
Finally, yes, it's definitely weird that this shirt was likely designed to appeal to retro gamers yet gets quite a few details wrong. Maybe the artist just thought they wouldn't notice? Or maybe he didn't realize some of the details were off himself?
Guys, it's quite possible the designs were intentionally altered to avoid copyright infringement :D
ReplyDeleteMy favorite TeeFury game shirt is my "Souper Mario" one: http://teevil.us/post/509032647
I don't even know what a Gensis is (I can't keep track of every ancient gaming console, okay?!), but I want that T-shirt forever.
ReplyDeleteA ha! You could be right, coolpowers. Thanks for offering up your thoughts :)
ReplyDeleteBTW, I love that "Souper Mario" shirt. I'll bet it would be a great shirt to own/wear this time of year!
You don't know what a Genesis/Mega Drive is, Trxd? Wow!
ReplyDeleteBasically, it's Sega's 16-bit system. It competed with Nintendo's Super Famicom/SNES and NEC's PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16.
I don't know how popular it was in Europe, but it was quite popular in the US. In fact, it outsold the SNES for a period of time, if memory serves.
Oh, and of course the most important info related to the Genesis/Mega Drive -- it was home to a huge number of amazing games, like Gunstar Heroes, Shining Force I and II, Sonic the Hedgehog, etc.
I'm sixteen years old, that console is like, pre-me.
ReplyDeleteWay to make a guy feel old, Trxd :P
ReplyDeleteBTW, you really should give those systems a try someday, even via emulation. Some of the best games you'll ever play!
I have don't worry :) Nothing on Genesis though.
ReplyDeleteChrono Trigger, Final Fantasy V / VI, Bubsy, Clock Tower, Yoshi's Island, these are all some of my favorite SNES games.
You should try the Genesis, too. Some great games there -- Super Fantasy Zone, Shining in the Darkness, Shining Force I and II, Landstalker, Gunstar Heroes, etc.
