Question of the day: Are you planning to pick up a PlayStation Vita?

As expected, Sony Computer Entertainment Japan opened the proverbial floodgates in regards to its PSP successor, officially called PlayStation Vita, during its Tokyo Game Show 2011 press conference last night.

The most interesting and pertinent information to come from said presser, according to yours truly:

1. The system's battery will provide users between three and five hours of entertainment "depending on the brightness of the screen, what content being played and if the network (3G/Wi-Fi) feature is being used or not."

2. Twenty-six PS Vita games will be available at launch, or so Sony says. (I'm more than willing to bet that these games will be released during the system's "launch window"--i.e., its first few months--rather than on Dec. 17, its Japanese launch day.)

3. Three of the above-mentioned games are new Hot Shots Golf, Katamari Damacy and Ridge Racer titles.

4. More than 74 additional games are currently in development for the PlayStation Vita/PS Vita/Vita/whatever-you-want-to-call-it.

Given all of the above, are you planning to pick up a PlayStation Vita as soon as it's available in your region, or are you planning to hold off (you know, until more games are released, until the system is cheaper, etc.)?

Or maybe you're not planning to buy the system regardless of its price or software library?

Pre-order: PlayStation Vita (WiFi model) or PlayStation Vita (3G model)

  1. It's interesting; this machine is very sexy and cool and I'd love to have one. But as with the first PSP, I only liked 2 or 3 games, so I just played with my friend's thing when we'd hang out. I feel the same may happen with the ridiculously named Vita, appealing as it is, and so unless a game like Cho Aniki: The Bear Wars comes out, I think I'll hold off for a while.

  2. To be perfectly honest, I may not get this on the grounds that I've been sticking to nintendo for far too long in terms of handhelds but I can say without doubt that this is 20 steps in the right direction compared to the psp's design and the games are looking terrific. So I may pick it up down the line if anything comes up.

  3. Hey there, J! I agree with you that the Vita, while rather strangely named, is a sexy-looking system. As for holding off for a while: I hear ya. I'm hoping/planning to get one eventually, but probably not until 2013 at the earliest.

It's definitely going to have to come down in price before I even consider it. Plus, although many games have been announced for release, few of them interest me at the moment. I'm sure that will change, but until it does I'll be sitting on the sidelines.

  4. Hello, Motherplayer! I like the design of the Vita, too, and like you I'll likely wait a bit before picking it up. Anyway, thanks for sharing your thoughts!

  5. Nope. The only thing that sounds remotely enticing is Katamari.

  6. Fair enough, Justin!

RE: Katamari -- although I like the idea of a new Katamari game, I'm cautious of any Katamari sequel that doesn't involve Keita Takahashi.

  7. YES!

I think the Vita is such a sexy machine. The games are looking great. Not sure what to think about all the PS3 ports, but I guess I have to decide which version to get. Right now my only quibbles would be that bubble UI and the battery life.

Also I have a lot of digital downloads from the PSP (I was addicted for a while). I have the Go, and it's very uncomfortable to hold. So I'm looking to replace it.

  8. Hey there, Darwin! Yeah, the PS3 ports really depress me, for some reason. Well, maybe not depress, but I don't like the precedent they could be setting. Other than that, and the system's price, I quite like the Vita :)

Anyway, after you get one, let me know, will you? I want to hear all about it :)

  9. I would hope its like the ipad/iphone where at least some games you only have to purchase once. Though I doubt it.

To this day I wish the PSP digital downloads could run on the PS3. Would be great to play Y's and stuff on the big screen :). There's so many RPGs as PSP digital downloads, I'm sure they would sell well.

  10. I agree, Darwin, although I also agree that I doubt it :\ It's in Sony's best interest for people to buy games as many times as possible, and as such you can bet that's likely what they'll try to get people to do. I hope I'm wrong, though, and they prove me wrong.

As for wishing PSP downloadable games could be played on the big screen via the PS3, I agree with that, too. Really, I'm not sure why they never allowed it. Maybe it's the same reason I mentioned above, or maybe it's just not possible (i.e., the PS3 is capable of running a PSP emulator)?

  11. Considering those PSP HD games are coming to the PS3, I would imagine emulation wouldn't have been that difficult. But what I do I know :)

I just saw these videos for the Vita:

Have to say, the AR thing is looking pretty interesting.

I wasn't, but then I heard they were doing a HD remake of Final Fantasy X so... y'no.

Time to get a job and drive myself crazy trying to juggle college and work and various addictions for a few months :D

  13. Darwin and Trxd: Sorry, your posts were sitting in my Spam folder all this time! I didn't even realize there *was* a Spam folder on Blogger :P

Anyway, just in case you see my response to your response: Are you still planning to get a Vita after it's released?
