While relaxing with "the fam" this past weekend, I missed a rather momentous holiday: The 25th anniversary of Metroid's release.
Thankfully, one of my favorite artists around, Andrew "Drew" Green, wasn't so absentminded (or careless). In fact, not only did he remember the anniversary of Samus Aran's debut, but he celebrated the occasion by conjuring up the wonderfully charming drawing that follows, too.
On his blog, the Atlantan says of his creation: "Nothing says 'happy birthday' like drawing the thing you love being munched on by an energy-sucking parasite." I can't say I disagree, Drew!

This is pretty dang great. I might have to celebrate by playing the original Metroid up to the point where I have to bomb up a short shaft and can't EVER do it. Then I'll quit in a rage.
Better yet, I'll just play Super Metroid. It's way less infuriating.
It *is* pretty dang great, isn't it? I absolutely love Drew's style :)
As for re-playing the original Metroid: I'm going to have to do that soon myself. Like you, though, I'll probably quit in a rage before finishing it.
Of course, I would have thought I'd do the same the last time I played Kid Icarus (on Wii VC a few years ago) and I actually ended up beating that one, so who knows?
Sadly, I haven't played Super Metroid since it was released looooooong ago. I loved it, too, but for some reason I've always much preferred the 8-bit original. Super Metroid has always seemed a bit too ... slick for me.
That comment is going to bring on the hate, isn't it?
Well, I'll just let you have your opinion...but...yes. Yes it will.
Ha ha! I know Super Metroid is the superior game for many reasons, but I can't help but love the original just a bit more :)
I don't even really care too much about Samus but Andrew is like... my idol. I want to lick his Wacom tablet.
Well now! You're making me blush, Curtis -- and I'm not even involved in this little Wacom-tablet-licking scenario :)
As for Drew being your idol: I can understand that. Don't sell yourself short, though -- I think you're both wonderful, talented artists!
I'll follow this up from twitter; NES Metroid I like because it's like real life; All alone, in the dark, not knowing where to go, an insane level of difficulty all to the sound of catchy music.
Super Metroid is the greatest anything ever (>_<) Then again, it doesn't have Samus in her Zero Suit :P
Oh, I like that description, SUIKA! And I agree -- esp. with the "all alone, all in the dark" part. Oh, and of course the catchy music part, too.
Greatest anything ever, eh, Simon? I'm surprised to hear you say that, to be honest -- mainly because I tend to think of you as a Sega man, first and foremost :)
I'm with Simon. It's in the top 3 of games I've played through the most.
Wow! What are the other two, Justin?
As for me, I remember playing through Super Metroid once and liking it quite a bit, but that's about it. I've never replayed or even really wanted to replay it, to tell you the truth. Unfortunately, I'm not sure why that is. Maybe that means I should just pick it up and play it again at some point, eh? :)
You should. No doubt in my mind. It doesn't age.
The other two? Probably Earthbound and Chrono Trigger.
OK, I'll give it another try, Justin. At some point. Along with Chrono Trigger.
