Cladun X2 kinda, sorta gets a North American release date

NIS America's Nao Zook took to the PlayStation Blog earlier today to chat about three of the company's upcoming games: Atelier Totori: The Adventurer of Arland, Cladun X2 and Disgaea 4.

The most interesting comment to escape Zook's lips? That Cladun X2--packed full of Mota's wonderful character designs, one of which can be seen above--will hit PSN at the end of this month. (To those of you who are interested: Atelier Totori will hit the streets on Sept. 27 while Disgaea 4 will precede it on Sept. 6.)

Admittedly, I would have preferred a solid release date, but as is far too often the case I'll take what I can get.

Ok, I was all excited by that adorable swordmage and then I honed in on the Atelier Totori release date and... D: September 27th is also when ICO/Shadow of the Colossus collection is coming out, and I'll be in the US at the time with no PS3 at my disposal! (and I'm supposed to review those games!! I'm so sad) Siiiigh

I know what you can do, Anne: Buy another PS3 when you arrive in the US, play and review those games and then ship the PS3 to me before you head back to Australia!

OK, so that's probably not the best idea :P

The perfect solution, Bryan! XD

I'm confused, is Cladun X2 a PSN-only release? You'll definitely be picking it up, right? Do you think I'd need to have played the original to fully enjoy X2?

I'm also surprised as to why they can't give a firm date when it's so close to its intended release. "End of the month" sounds rather wishy-washy, to be honest. Though I'm really impressed that Zook took the time to reply to every single comment left on the Playstation Blog post, that's pretty dedicated!

And, as always, thanks for tipping me off to news I might've otherwise missed :) I'm going to head over to VGW and do a quick news update on this very thing right now

You guys! I picked up Cladun and could *not* get into it. I blamed the mashup or pixel art and elements which voided/conflicted with the pixel treatment, like smooth text and outlines around pixels, etc! I found it so grumpifying.

Should i get over it and try it again? You both seem excited about the sequel.

I hate that "later this month" crap...BAH! Oh...and speaking of release dates, apparently Star Fox 64 3D was pushed back into September...damn.

Anne: Yep, Cladun X2 is a PSN-only release (as was the original, sadly). And, yes, I'll definitely be picking it up.

I can't say for sure that you don't need to play the original Cladun to enjoy the sequel, but I get the sense that that is the case. I'm guessing folks who played the first won't have to deal with the same learning curve that folks who are new to the series will have to go through, but that shouldn't keep you from playing this one.

Oh, and you're most welcome for the tip-off :)

Oh, Curtis, I understand how you feel, believe me! It really irked me at first how the character sprites are 8-bit while the backgrounds (and even weapons!) are 16-bit, etc. I eventually got over it, though, because I enjoyed the roguelike gameplay.

As for whether or not you should try it again: I'm not sure! As much as I've enjoyed the game, I can see why others would not. If you're at all interested in it then, yes, maybe you should try again. I wouldn't feel bad, though, if it just doesn't click with you.

Justin: The funniest part about this "news" is that NISA mentioned earlier in the year that it would be out in August, so now they're just specifying which part of August. Oh, well, I'm basically broke at the moment anyway, so I won't be picking it up until later in the year -- unless I can get the folks at NISA to give me a free copy :P

In regards to StarFox: I didn't know that! Of course, I'm not all that interested in the game, to tell you the truth. I liked the original StarFox, but every one after that hasn't interested me. I think I shunned SF 64 because I didn't like it's graphics, though. Maybe the improved 3DS visuals will turn me on?

GASP! The original Star Fox is basically a stillborn mess compared to the 64 version. I don't know how anyone could like something like Sin & Punishment but have never given Starfox 64 a chance...that bogles my brain, Bryan.

:-P

Ha! Well, I wouldn't say I never gave it a chance. I owned it back in the day and played it a bit -- and watched my brother play it a *lot*, if I remember correctly. The graphics and gameplay just never clicked with me. Granted, the gameplay of the original game never clicked with me, either -- though I *did* like the original's graphics well enough.

We'll see. Maybe I'll give the game another try after I eventually get a 3DS...

Oh. Well, that's different, then. I thought you meant you'd never even tried it.

Bryan Ochalla said...

Oh, no, I tried it. It definitely was the sort of game I preferred to watch someone else play than play it myself, though. Of course, the same was true of the original. I have a hard time dealing with 3D flying games, for some reason...

I just got an email from NIS America yesterday which stated the release date for ClaDun x2 is August 30th!

Ah! Well, that's interesting, Anne. I wonder why they didn't say that on the PS Blog? Oh, well, it's good to know regardless :)
