Why? Well, for starters, there's this recently-announced 3DS game's rad (hey, I'm a child of the 1980s) box art:
And then there's this super-cute Pikachu paper craft, which will be given to folks who purchase the game--which is a sequel to the 2009 WiiWare title Melee! Pokemon Scramble (aka Pokemon Rumble in the West)--from a select group of Japanese retailers after it's released on July 28.
All that said, I'm not sure I can see myself dropping $39.99 on such a game once I finally pick up a 3DS--especially if titles like Luigi's Mansion 2, Paper Mario 3DS and Super Mario 3DS are even half as enticing as it seems they're going to be.

Maybe some day. I bought Pokemon Rumble on the WiiWare service, and I actually really liked it. It was kind of repetitive, but...pretty fulfilling.
ReplyDeleteAh, well, that's good to know (that the WiiWare version was enjoyable)! I never played the WiiWare version, but I liked its art style. It sounds like this one should be a slightly deeper experience, which I guess is why it's going to be a full-priced retail release.
ReplyDeleteI'm really behind in all this stuff. What's Pokemon Rumble/Scramble? Is it like that pokemon game for the ds they released years ago where you race them?
ReplyDeleteHey there, Ala Mode 7 :) Nope, this game is more of a battle royale starring wind-up Pokemon toys. I've heard some people compare it to the Dynasty Warriors games -- although a lot cuter, obviously. I've never played either games/series, so I can't say if that's true or not. Really, my interest in this particular game can be boiled down to three bullet points: The game's art style, its box art and the Pikachu paper craft :)
ReplyDeleteHold your head up high Bryan, there's no shame!
ReplyDeleteI'm kinda interested in Pokemon anything, this one actually looks like it could be fun, especially controlling the Pokemon directly =3
Ha! Thanks for the support, Trxd :)
ReplyDeleteI'm not usually interested in these Pokemon spin-offs, by the way. I think it's all about the art style for this one, as the style of gameplay usually isn't my cup of tea.
I'm guessing you've enjoyed past Pokemon games, Trxd? If so, which ones are your faves?
Don't get me started on Pokemon Bryan, It'll take a whole article for me to explain my opinion on the series as a whole, it isn't perfect and has had many stupid decisions and bad turns, but it has heart, and it NEEDS to get with the fucking times.
ReplyDeleteI just want a Pokemon Snap 2...
Hmmm, I'd love to hear more of your thoughts on this subject at some point, esp. as I'm not as up-to-date on the Pokemon series as I probably should be. I know a bit about each of the games that have been released over the years, but the only ones I've actually played are Red, Emerald (barely), Pearl (barely) and Black. Oh, and Snap :) I'm guessing one of your beefs with the series is that it barely evolves from release to release (generation to generation) and that it barely embraces online play?
ReplyDeleteJust that it doesn't change at all, the more different a Pokemon game is, the more I love it.
ReplyDeleteIt's still the exact same game as Red and Blue, just with better looking graphics and we can breed now, and we have random gizmos. Its the fifth generation now so this is getting a bit ridiculous.
Ah, yes, I can see that. Sadly, that seems to be how Nintendo operates in a lot of ways these days. Look at the Animal Crossing series, which is stagnating even worse than the Pokemon series! It's pretty aggravating, if you ask me, especially when they could be innovating some of their IPs in so many ways. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteAh, I did an article on this game the other day :) I'm pretty excited that it has StreetPass capabilities, which is something they should've added to the Pokedex 3D (seemed like a no-brainer to me!)
ReplyDeleteI can't believe they managed to make the Pokemon look even cuter than they already were... (and somehow made the two legendary 'mons look cute even though I think they're horribly ugly normally)
Pokedex 3D doesn't have StreetPass capabilities? I didn't know that! I would have thought that would be a no-brainer, too. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteAs for the Pokemon in this game being cute -- I agree! I know some folks hate these wind-up toy 'mons, but I think they're adorable :)
Totally agree with you Bryan, Nintendo seems to really like keeping their main franchises nice and safe, it gets on my nerves when it becomes really blatant and annoying.
ReplyDeleteI mean, the Wii U, it's just the Wii that finally has current gen graphics, and there's a touchscreen now. Is there any point? Is that their idea of the next generation?
[/cynical]
I'm actually OK with the Wii U, Trxd. I think the touchscreen seems like a cool addition, and I'm looking forward to seeing how Nintendo and third-parties make use of it.
ReplyDeleteReally, I'd much rather Nintendo innovate in this way (w/ its hardware and controllers) than follow what MS and Sony are doing. Otherwise, all three systems would be very similar and the only reason you would own one over the other would be based on exclusive releases.
Sure, I'd love it if the Wii U was even more powerful than it's seemingly going to be -- I hate the idea that it could quickly fall behind MS' and Sony's next-gen systems after they're released -- but I'm OK with it being HD and being "just a bit" (supposedly) more powerful than the PS3 and 360.
Fair enough, but just for me, current gen graphics mean nothing, and a touchscreen can be implemented well sometimes, but it isn't nearly enough to warrant a full purchase.
ReplyDeleteActually, I think some of the other things included on the controller are cool, too. The outward-facing camera, for instance, combined with the screen, will allow devs to do some cool things -- as shown in a few of the Wii U demos. *That* is the kind of stuff I'm interested in. Also, I like that this system will have more traditional controls, in one sense, while also allowing continued use of the Wiimote, etc. That's just me, though -- I know the Wii U isn't going to be for everybody, just as the 360 and PS3 and Wii aren't currently for everybody. To each his own! :)
ReplyDeleteI am a big Pokemon-fan but I think this game looks so ugly and bad :(
ReplyDeleteThe Pokemon-design is just terrible.
Too sad...
I wont buy this Pokemon-something.
Understood, Melody! I never picked it up myself, by the way. The gameplay just doesn't appeal to me. I still find the graphics to be cute, though :)
