It's hard to be a non-Japanese PSP owner these days. While the system continues to sell boatloads in its homeland, its sales have gone down the toilet everywhere else--to the point where publishers no longer want to support it outside of the Land of the Rising Sun.
As such, I'm more than a bit worried that Vanillaware's Grand Knights History--which has graphics that Anoop over at andriasang.com describes as "so lovely you'll want to travel back in time and off Jeff Polygon, the inventor of the polygon"--will, like so many recent and upcoming PSP releases, remain a Japan-only affair.
To see firsthand why that would be a crying shame, check out the following trailer for this fabulous looking RPG:
Grand Knights History will hit the streets in Japan on Sept. 1 with a price tag of ¥5,229 (approximately $65). Here's hoping this Marvelous-published title eventually makes its way to other territories, too.

The battlefield looks way cool! I'd be interested to see how it works. And the board game sequences? Very fresh. For an RPG, anyway. And any game with customizable characters that change with whatever armor or weapon I put on them has my vote.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I'm loving the looks of this one, too, Justin. Hopefully Atlus or Marvelous will bring it over here. Vanillaware's previous titles have attracted a pretty good following in the States (as far as I'm aware), so hopefully it's being planned as we speak.
ReplyDeleteAggggh this looks so beautiful! I love Vanillaware, even though Odin Sphere's battle system wasn't really my favorite (and that lag was SO awful sometimes!). I'll just have to import this if it comes down to it, mwahahaha
ReplyDeleteIn other news, I finally got my own PSP (purple, very chic) and I'm quickly finding that Australia really doesn't have any love for Sony's handheld. None of the stores carry any PSP games! I'll have to import them all. Sigh
You know what's sad, Anne? I've never played Odin Sphere. I've just drooled over it :) I have played Muramasa, though, and I loved it. This game looks even better, IMO.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on acquiring a PSP, BTW! A purple one sounds great! Sorry you're going to have to import games for the most part, though. I'm guessing that won't be cheap?
Actually, importing games from the US isn't bad because games there are generally a lot cheaper anyway. It's the shipping that's killer, though. I'll probably have a ton of games sent to my parents house and pick them up when I visit in September ;)
ReplyDeleteAh, I thought shipping might be the problem. Sounds like you've got a good plan, though, in shipping the games to your parents' house and then taking them back to Australia from there. Which games are you planning to get, anyway?
ReplyDeleteOh, I've got quite a list!
ReplyDelete- Monster Hunter Freedom Unite
- Final Fantasy Tactics War of the Lions
- Loco Roco (any)
- Patapon (any)
- Lunar: Silver Star Harmony
- MGS Peace Walker
- Crisis Core
- Jeanne d'Arc
And I'll probably come up with a few more by September, haha. Not sure I'll get all of these, though... If you have any must-have PSP game suggestions, let me know! Or if you think one of the games on my list isn't worth the money ;)
Oh, that's quite a list! I want Loco Roco and Patapon, too. Also, the FF remakes, Half-Minute Hero and What Did I Do to Deserve This, My Lord? 2. The last two are highly recommended among PSP veterans, BTW! I'll let you know if I can think of any others...
ReplyDeleteOh, I've never heard of What Did I Do to Deserve This, My Lord? (what a title!) I'm going to have to add that to the list. Luckily a lot of these games can be bought for under $20, but even so I'm going to have to be choosy
ReplyDeleteOne of the cool things about What Did I Do To Deserve This, My Lord! 2, Anne, is that it includes the first game, too. So, it's basically two games in one!
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I can't wait to hear which games you actually pick up.
