Speaking of Tomohiro Nishikado ...

I didn't know until last night, when I wrote my review of Taito Legends 2 (read it here), that more than a decade after Tomohiro Nishikado designed Space Invaders he designed one of my all-time favorite PC Engine games, Parasol Stars.

That was a mind-blowing discovery to yours truly. After all, few, if any, of Nishikado's other noteworthy titles--like Chase HQ II: Special Criminal Investigation, Darius II and Darius Twin--could be described as bright or cheerful (two words that are practically plastered across the front of Parasol Stars' manual, below).

Of course, Nishikado also had a hand in creating the SNES RPG, Lufia & the Fortress of Doom (known as Estopolis Denki to Super Famicomers), so clearly the man wasn't against creating a colorful game or two.

  3. YEah, Lufia was on the more colorful and lighthearted-looking RPGs out there...Chrono Trigger is pretty amazing in that respect. Play it. Now. :-P

  4. Oh, I'll play it, don't you worry. I have to get through Pokemon Black first, though. And maybe Pokemon Silver. Hoo boy...

  6. My brother and I always fought over this game. We'd be pissed at one another for hogging all the bonus items and one day my mom had enough of it, and crumpled the box and manual in her hands and threw it away with the card.

Naturally I snatched the card out of the trash and still play it today ^_^.

Despite everything, we still managed to beat it multiple times. Needless to say after that incident we learned to get along better.

  7. Ha! You two must have been *quite* annoying for your mom to crumple up the box and manual! Thankfully you salvaged it, though :)

I've never played the game with another person, sadly. I imagine it gets a bit crazy, huh?

  8. If you can find someone to play with it's well worth it. You can pass bubbles between players so you can either coordinate attacks, or get the other player out of trouble. You can also be a dick, and catch the other player unaware and nail em with a bubble just as an enemy descends upon them >:).

    Lots of fun.

  9. Maybe I'll get the hubs to play it with me at some point, Retronick. You never know, maybe he'll like it! I'll have to go easy on him, though :)
